Driving to the Office...

Boone, North Carolina this morning at 8:45AM. I was heading north on 421 coming from Deep Gap. Fall colors are just beginning to fade, thunder clouds rolling in, chasing the sunlight across the mountain tops...several hours later, temperatures have dropped 20 degrees and there is light snow forecast over the next two days. Time to gear up for snow and ski season! — in Boone.

Wooly Worm Festival

Woolly Worm Festival Banner Elk, NCOctober weekends in the High Country are just plain awesome!  There is so much to do with all the Fall Festivals and Corn Mazes and Pumpkin Patches, one has to just pick a few things to do each year.  This year, we would like to draw your attention to the Wooly Worm Festival in the quaint village town of Banner Elk, located just a short drive from Boone, between Boone and Grandfather Mountain.

The festival is on October 19th and 20th.  The Woolly Worm races begin around 10:00 a.m. Each heat consists of 25 worms and races continue all day until the grand final around 4 p.m. The winning worm on Saturday is declared the official winter forecasting agent. The Sunday worm races are for prestige, fun and small prizes.

In addition to the Woolly Worm Races, the festival features crafts, food vendors, live entertainment and much more. Last year’s festival attracted an estimated 23,000 fans, 140 vendors and around 1,000 race entrants.

The Woolly Worm Festival is sponsored by the Avery County Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club of Banner Elk and a portion of the proceeds go to support children’s charities throughout the county and small business and tourism. New 40 Acre Water Park Planned Next to Tweetsie Railroad in Blowing Rock, NC

Plans are underway for a new 50 acre water park next to Tweestie Railroad.  It still has some hurdles to jump before it becomes reality, but it sure would be fun!  And great for the area.  I first heard of it about 6 months ago and the planning process with Watauga County and the State of North Carolina has continued since that time.  This article in Blowing Rock's local paper, The Blowing Rocket, tells more...

Indoor water park planned near Tweetsie

by Anna Oakes, April 6, 2013

Watauga County’s latest tourism attraction could be an indoor water park if plans for Middle Fork Falls Resort come to fruition.

The development would be located between Mystery Hill and Tweetsie Railroad on U.S. 321 between Boone and Blowing Rock.

Steve Moberg, owner and general manager of Crestwood Resort and Spa, confirmed that plans are under way for Middle Fork Falls Resort, but could not provide more information as of presstime.

According to a description of the project on LoopNet.com, a commercial real estate listings website, the multi-use commercial development will include a 50,000-square-foot year-round indoor water park, a 10,000-square-foot full-service restaurant, 35,000 square feet in commercial retail space and a combination convenience store and fast food restaurant building.

The website states the site is to be delivered “pad ready” with all utilities, including water, sewer, emergency water for fire protection, natural gas, electrical, telephone and cable.

Joe Furman, Planning & Inspections director for Watauga County, said Moberg has discussed the project with his office for several months, but that no plans have been submitted.

“It’s not a project yet for us to review,” Furman said, but “it would seem that what he has proposed will probably work on that piece of property.”

Furman said the project would likely be subject to provisions in the county’s Watershed Protection Ordinance, High Impact Land Uses ordinance, Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance, Erosion Control Ordinance, Subdivisions and Multi-Unit Structures Ordinance, state building code and other regulations.

County planning staff and the Watauga County Planning Board would review any plans that are submitted, and the project may require approval from the Watauga County Board of Commissioners if a variance is needed.

Furman did not know for certain what the developer’s plans are for water, but noted that there “are privately owned and operated water and sewer systems there … and my assumption is it would be connected to those systems.”

Last year, the town of Blowing Rock completed an interconnection water line connecting its water system with the town of Boone’s, but no extensions to the line, which is designated for emergency purposes only, are planned at this time.

App Ski Mountain and Boone Back Country

There is not much of ski season left this year, but we are skiing this week and thought I would share this cool look at the terrain park at App Ski Mountain.  Also...and here is an exciting idea for adventure seekers...there is good bit of video taken in the Boone back country (hills off the parkway, etc.) where these guys cut some fresh powder and created some great jumps.

Bears, Oh My!

I received a funny call recently from rental guests.  "What should we do about the bears?", they asked.  "What bears do you mean?", I inquired with a little hesitation.  "Well, there are bears on the driveway over by the trash cans.  We don't want to get too close to them.  Could they be dangerous?".

"Yes!" was my emphatic answer.  I explained that these are actual wild bears, the Mama could have cubs nearby, etc.  I told them to stay inside and not to get near the bears.  By the time one of our employees got there, 12 curious guests had gathered in the driveway with smart phones and ipads, anything that would take pictures and videos!  The bears didn't seem to mind (munch, munch...).  Funny critters, 'dem bears!
